Tesla App Now Shows When FSD is Active In New Update

The official Tesla mobile app is gaining a feature we’ve wanted for a while now. The app will now display in real time whether FSD is active, with a new “Self-Driving” indicator.

While the Tesla app has displayed a moving vehicle for several years, since Tesla moved to full 3D models, it is now displaying the blue path and the Self-Driving label when FSD is active for the first time.

Unfortunately, the feature is only available to a segment of users right now due to it requiring the latest app update and a recent vehicle update.

The feature rolled out with Tesla app version 4.58.5, which started making its way to owners last week. However, it also requires software version 2026.20.6.1 to be installed in your vehicle.

A Closer Look at the Real-Time Animation

X user Jordan Camina (@hletes) spotted the feature in the wild and shared the details with us. What’s interesting is that this isn’t limited to HW4 vehicles like some of the other Self-Driving features, including the Self-Driving app.

Camina posted a thread on X showing off the new feature. The clip shows the mobile app displaying Camina’s HW3 Model S traveling down a road, with the FSD status highlighted.

The phrase Self-Driving appears in bright blue text right below the speed readout when FSD is actively being used, much like on the main vehicle touchscreen. It also includes the signature glowing blue navigation path characteristic of FSD.

While Tesla has been hinting at more visual updates to the Tesla app, no other 3D models are displayed with this update. The “moving” vehicle in the app still only goes straight and does not show any other 3D visuals such as traffic lights or anything else.

Fleet-Wide Availability

Camina tested the feature on a Hardware 3 (HW3/AI3) vehicle. Interestingly, this particular car is yet to receive Tesla’s new FSD v14 Lite build that started rolling out to older legacy models last week. Instead, it’s still running FSD 12.6.4, which was the latest software update available for HW3 vehicles for about 14 months before Tesla finally pushed the v14 Lite package to the public. This new feature likely requires a change in the information the vehicle sends to the Tesla app, which is why it’s not available in previous versions.

However, the good news is that this is expected to support all vehicles, regardless of whether they’re Intel or AMD, or HW3 or HW4.

Tesla customers have been asking for a remote FSD indicator like this for a long time. One owner, @ryanjaycowan, even cooked up a design concept last year that closely matches the final implementation.

Beyond the new visuals, Tesla app version 4.58.5 also included new phrases hinting that Tesla plans to use the cabin camera for FSD authentication, allowing it to verify who is behind the wheel before enabling FSD. Coupling that identity verification with this FSD indicator will make tracking your vehicle easier, especially once these consumer vehicles start operating independently as driverless robotaxis.
